Melee at Mendenhall...involving teachers?

The image “http://www.gcsnc.com/schools/middle/mendenhall/Mendenhall.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. In the News of the Weird category...two GCS teachers at Mendenhall Middle School have been suspended without pay from the district pending an investigation following a female teacher-on female teacher fight that occurred inside a school classroom Tuesday morning. One of the two was charged with simple assault.

News & Record:

Catherine Hazelton, 40, of Greensboro, is accused of slapping another teacher in the face and telling the other teacher that she was going to stab her, according to arrest warrants on file at the Guilford County Courthouse.

According to police, the fight happened in a classroom before the school day began and other school employees stepped in to stop the fight. No students were in the classroom when the women were fighting, said Sgt. J. Heard, supervisor of the Greensboro Police Department's school resource officers.

The women were friends and the fight started over a conflict over a family member of one of the women, Heard said.

The other woman involved in the fight, Calandra McCullers Lewis of Greensboro, had noticeable bruises and lacerations on her face, according to court documents. No police officers witnessed the fight, so Lewis went to a magistrate and took out the warrants charging Hazelton, Heard said.

the whole story is this: Calandra was having an affair with Catherine's brother behind her back all the while talking about him like a dog to catherine at work and telling him lies about her on the phone. This was happening during the months Catherine was caring for her mother who was dying of cancer at the time and working every day beacause she didn't want to be absent and let her students or school down. Calandra came into Catherine's classroom that morning and instigated the situation. Catherine simply defended herself. Calandra ran to the police because she "lost". The case was dismissed against Catherine and the charges were dropped because "there was no sufficient evidence to support she was the aggressor" (probably because she WASN'T). Interestingly enough, Calandra's teammate (a fellow co-worker) knew about the affair and said nothing to Catherine or any other school official and Calandra had a baby shortly after this incident..wonder who's it is. This happened two years ago and neither of them work for Guilford County Schools anymore. Don't you think it't time to take this down? I was looking for actual "news" on your blog, but was disappointed to see this still here.

I am very good friends with both of these teachers and what was posted above is not at all the truth. The only factual information is that there was an incident, the part about Ms. Hazelton caring for her mother prior to the incident, and Mrs. Lewis having a baby a year after the incident. This incident did happend two years ago and both women have moved on with their lives and are happy. It is time to take it down so we can read actual news pertaining to teachers still in GCS. I have to agree with the above comment, it is disappointing.

My teammate came in this morning insisting I visit this page. After reading this blog all I could say was wow! It was bad enough this incident ever occurred not to mention a huge embarrassment to GCS, but what is sadder is the fact that after two years it is still being brought up. Of course when it happen rumors and speculations spread quickly throughout GCS, but it appears they are still going strong today. This just goes to show that some people are bitter and like to dwell on the negatives instead of the positives for their own personal satisfaction. I am not here to take sides but merely point out a few things that caught my attention while I was reading the blog this morning. First, the article stated it started over a conflict over a family member. That could have been as simple as one of the women making a sly remark about the other’s mother. Come on people! Next, I couldn’t believe people (adults) were discussing who won or lost a fight. How immature! I thought we left that type of immaturity back in high school. If Catherine was busy working and caring for her dying mother while her brother was out allegedly having an affair, then that doesn’t say much about the love or concern the brother had for the mother or for Catherine. My three brothers would have been right by my side the entire time helping to care for our parent(s). Why would a teammate report something that isn’t his or her business to a school official? That just didn’t make any sense to me. If the alleged affair that was mentioned was/is true, then that was among two consenting adults. My teammate and I have worked together for five years now, but his business is his business. Are we in daycare and still tattle- telling? Anonymous (May 7th) sounds as if he/she has a great rapport with Catherine or they may even be one in the same (writing in third person to justify their own inappropriate actions and making up some untruths to make herself look good). The previous blogger stated that Catherine did not want to let her students or school down, but they failed to report that a few weeks prior to this incident Catherine walked out on her students while they were in the middle of testing and went home without telling anyone. I would definitely classify this as letting your students down. She was suspended for her actions. If you ask me, I think both of these ladies let people down in some way or the other. I don’t know who is telling the truth and frankly I don’t care, but words from my mother may hold true in this case, “if a person will lie they will steal, and once a thief and a liar always a thief and a liar”. If you visit the N.C Department of Corrections website www.doc.state.nc.us (offender search) and put both of these ladies names in you can be the judge of which person is possibly telling the truth according to my mother’s quote. Mother is always right (had to use this from Waterboy). From my knowledge the public was not made aware of what happened inside the courtroom, but it appears that Anonymous (May 7th) was there. However, charges in the “fight” case may have been dropped due to no sufficient evidence, but there was sufficient evidence to support that credit card theft did occur and probation was served. Catherine had bi-polar tendencies and Calandra had OCD tendencies so basically you had a “crazy” and a “want to be perfect” person involved. This apparently wasn’t a good mix of personalities, but they were both excellent teachers (despite the time one of the two walked out on their students). All this to say that I don’t think anyone is solely innocent and why does it really matter at this point. It happened and I hope both women now realize the mistake(s) made and how the situation could have been handled differently. According to another blogger, both women are happy and have moved on so we should do the same. Best wishes to everyone!
