More on the calendar controversy...GCS told the state to go to hell last night, instead, the state plans to go to the meeting table, tomorrow.

N&R:

State education officials will meet Thursday to discuss what to do now that the Guilford County school board has said it will not change its scheduled snow make-up days.

Andrew Cox, an official with the state Department of Public Instruction, said the state associate superintendent and state school board chairman will meet tomorrow morning in Raleigh to discuss what to do about the matter.

Of all the links on this blog, one that I find conspicuously absent is www.saveoursummers.com. Why's that? If you're going to pin the responsibility of the school calendar law on anyone, it's this group. And this group isn't the tourism lobby. I'll gladly hang my hat with SOS-NC because at the core, it's parents like me who believe that a traditional calendar works fine and doesn't hinder educational development for the vast majority of students. NOTHING will be perfect for everyone. But that's why most systems have the choice of year-round schools (for those families that prefer it), magnet programs of every proclivity, vocation programs, middle college programs, dual enrollment programs...and I could go on and on. Seems to me that the only group we're really slamming here are those of us who just want a solid education for our children conducted on a traditional calendar. There are absolutely NO DEMONSTRABLE OUTCOMES that show that starting school the first week of August and running it through the middle/end of the next June (with 180 instructional days)produces better students, better scores, happier people, etc.
