The cuts may not be as bad

The News & Record reports that the district will only have to write out the check for $958,000, this according to GCS Supt. Mo Green.

The school system announced last month they would need to return more than $5 million to the state because of a state budget shortfall and lower than expected student enrollment. However, Green said the state notified the school system late last week Guilford County must return $958,000 in per student funding. School officials originally estimated the amount at $2.3 million.

Green said he will present final budget cuts to the board of education during the board's work session next week. The board will likely vote on the cuts during their regular board meeting Dec. 18.

That is good news for our children.

However, it still does not excuse bad budgeting on the part of the state. It does not excuse the wasteful spending of our precious taxpayer dollars...what few we have left. And if anything, I still think GCS should rightly tell the state to go to hell and not send back a dime.

E.C. :)
