Daniels questions supply budget

The image “http://www.gcsnc.com/boe/images/daniels_c.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. Newly-installed GCS Board member Paul Daniels wasted no time Tuesday evening querying Supt. Mo Green regarding the supply budget.

And rightfully so.

Vital monies for school and classroom supplies in this budget are on the chopping block as the District mulls over how to send back $5 million in state money to the Governor. Mo Green updated the Board where his staff was in terms of continuing to look at what kinds of cuts can be made and where.

Trouble is...these funds for supplies never seem to get to the classroom.

Daniels seemed very concerned that teachers shell out so much of their personal money for supplies that should be district-provided. Credit should also be given to re-elected Board member Darlene Garrett, who express similar concerns.

I've been talking about this for a long time now. And in these tough economic times, the last thing our teachers need to be doing is excessive spending out of their own pockets for supplies that should be district-provided: copy paper, printer ink cartridges...I can go on and on.

Bravo to Daniels and others for making sure these funds get to their respective classrooms where they're needed the most. I've called for a public audit of this supply budget in the past, and I'll continue to call for it. These supply dollars should not get cut.

E.C. :)

What is the "Teacher Supply Warehouse" and where did it come from, who funds it and why is it being advertised and utilized now? Is this all part of the new 'stategic' plan? Did Santa come early? Whas up? (see GC website for picture of happy teachers "shopping" in the new warehouse)
