N&R:
Cynthia Sevier, the school system’s director of nutrition, said her office has received nearly 35,000 applications for the program since enrollment began in July. Sevier has read report after report about the financial crisis, knowing that her people would soon see the effects in their cafeterias.
Students can enroll in the program at any point in the year, something Sevier believes many parents might not know.
“We just feel like this is a program that parents can take advantage of and they’re not and we just want to make them aware of that,” she said.
Sevier’s staff is developing resource material for companies to hand out to employees when layoffs occur.
About 48 percent of the school system’s students are enrolled in the free and reduced meals program. Enrollment in the program does not typically reach that level until much later in the year, Sevier said.
