Officials looking to change curriculum (News 14)

How about less-test-intensive?

In a recent News 14 Carolina story, DPI is also looking at making its testing program more transparent.

News 14 Carolina (with video):

The N.C. Department of Public Instruction is retooling the entire standard course of study in an effort to make students more globally competitive.

"What we have found is that our standard course of study over the years has become too heavy, too filled with 'nice to know' but not 'essential to know,' " Rebecca Garland, chief academic officer for DPI, said.

The group is considering many factors, including national and international standards, to overhaul the curriculum and statewide tests.
"We are doing a review of all of the standards in the standard course of study through a filter of, 'Is this something that a student would need to know in the long-term? Is it an enduring piece of knowledge or skill that students need to know for life and not just long enough to be able to take a test?' " Garland said.

That's progress. Baby-steps, but it is progress. I've been advocating for reforms at DPI for a long time so this is much-needed progress.

E.C. :)
